Diet and Kidney Health

If you suffer from kidney problems or kidney pain, changing your diet can make a world of difference.

People with kidney problems should be passing approximately 2.5 quarts of urine each day. To this end, you should be drinking approximately 14 cups of fluid each day. Most doctors recommend drinking water instead of juices, teas, sodas and other beverages.

If your kidney problems include kidney stones, you might need to restrict foods that contain high levels of oxalates, including:

  • Rhubarb
  • Collard greens
  • Okra
  • Spinach
  • Swiss chard
  • Almonds
  • Soy products.

Other items are high in oxalates as well. Talk to your doctor about foods you should avoid.
