bladder: A hollow, muscular, balloon-shaped organ in the pelvis that stores urine until it is full, then excretes it through the urethra and out of the body.
calcium kidney stone: The most common type of stone, containing calcium. Patients with these stones retain the calcium in their kidneys.
chronic renal failure: A gradual decrease in organ function, often caused by other medical conditions, such as hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes.
cystine stone: A rare, hereditary stone comprised of cystine, a building blocks of muscles, nerves and other parts of the body. Cystine buildup in urine can form a stone.
end stage renal disease: Occurs when organ function drops below 10 percent and the kidneys can no longer process wastes effectively enough to maintain life. Can be treated but not cured with dialysis or kidney transplant.
dialysis: An artificial filtering system that replaces lost organ function.
ESWL: Abbreviation for extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy.
